The most anticipated films of the Cannes Film Festival 2022



The 75th edition Cannes film festival will run from May 17-28, 2022 and will host a series of highly anticipated films. The Cannes Film Festival is revered as one of the most prestigious in the world and has been partly responsible for launching the careers of prestigious filmmakers, such as Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro after their films performed well at the festival. Although the jury for this year’s festival has yet to be announced, last year it was led by Spike Lee and other members including Maggie Gyllenhaal and Melanie Laurant.

In addition to the Best Director, Actress, Actor and Screenplay awards, the Cannes Film Festival has three separate awards for films. These are the Jury Prize, the Grand Prix, and the most prestigious is the Palme d’Or which rewards the best film. Previous winners of the award are Bong Joon-ho Parasiteby Tarantino pulp Fictionand Martin Scorsese Taxi driver. Although the 2020 edition of the festival was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2021 Palme d’Or was awarded to Julia Ducournau Titanium.

There are 18 films competing for the awards at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. They include new and old auteur films from all over the world, meaning the festival is arguably a much better celebration of world cinema than the Oscars. Although the majority of the competition is led by non-English language films, this year’s Cannes lineup includes films that are likely to be big hits with Western audiences. A disappointment in this year’s lineup is the absence of a rumored new movie from Dunes director David Lynch, who claimed he had no projects in development. Regardless of that disappointment, there are plenty of films at Cannes that will delight moviegoers, and here are all of the most anticipated films from the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Z – Michel Hazanavicius

French director Michel Hazanavicius is best known for his 2011 film The artistwhich won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The artist may seem unattainable at first glance as the film is mostly silent and shot in black and white, however, it is heartwarming and, more importantly, hilarious. Hazanavicius’ next film Z is another comedy but works in a completely different stage of The artist. Z (also known as final cut) is a zombie comedy that is a remake of the Japanese film by Shinichirou Ueda A cup of the dead, which received great acclaim upon its release. Due to the accessibility of zombie movies, Z may be Hazanavicius’s chance to introduce himself to a wider audience and if it’s as revered as Ueda’s film, it’s sure to be a hit.

Decision to leave – Park Chan-wook

Decision to leave is an upcoming mystery film from South Korean master Park Chan-wook. Chan-wook is best known for the Vengeance trilogy, which included Old boyand his 2016 erotic thriller The servant – all of which demonstrate his penchant for violence and morally ambivalent characters. Decision to leave stars Park Hae-il (memories of murder) and Lee Jung Hyun (Peninsula) among other things, and traces a detective who investigates a murder and falls in love with the widow, who is also the main suspect in the crime. Yes Decision to leave is something like previous Park Chan-wook films, there are sure to be plenty of twists and eccentricities along the way. Decision to leave has been selected to compete for the 2022 Palme d’Or.

Elvis – Baz Luhrmann

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic will star Austin Butler (Once upon a time in Hollywood) in the lead role, with a strong supporting cast that includes Tom Hanks and Kodi Smit-McPhee, and stranger things‘Dacre Montgomery. The trailer for Elvis promises the film will chronicle the king of rock ‘n roll’s entire life, and director Baz Luhrmann has said he hopes the film “paint a canvas of American life in the 50s, 60s and 70s.” Luhrmann has proven his ability to work with huge stars and convincingly portray historical periods with his previous efforts, such as Gatsby the magnificent, red Milland Romeo + Juliet. The stylized vision of the director must marry well with Elvis‘ and Butler’s vocals, and the film currently has a release date of June 24, 2022.

Three thousand years of nostalgia will tell the story of a scholar who meets a Djinn (a supernatural being in Islamic mythology who is often anglicized as a demon or genie), who offers him three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

Future Crimes – David Cronenberg

Cronenberg reunited with actor Viggo Mortensen for the film, which also stars Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux. The stars at noon is Claire Denis’ second film of 2022 after Both sides of the blade debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and won Denis the Silver Bear for Best Director. Broker – Hirokazu Kore-eda

Hirokazu Kore-eda is best known for his touching 2018 drama Shoplifters which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Kore-eda’s success at the festival did not stop there, he also won the Jury Prize in 2013 for Like father, like son. His previous accomplishments at Cannes mean his latest film Broker is one of the favorites for this year’s Palme d’Or. Although Hirokazu Kore-eda is a Japanese filmmaker, Broker is a South Korean film and will be his second consecutive film not in his native language, after directing the French film The truth in 2019. Most often compared to Japanese master Yasukirō Ozu, Kore-eda’s latest film will tell another story that examines the intricacies of personal and family relationships.
