The Cyberpunk Game Genre: Past, Present, and Future

0

Even though cyberpunk may sound like an 80s punk rock band, it’s not quite what you think. A marriage between the words “cybernetics”, the concept of replacing human functions with computerized ones, and “punk”, the musical genre – cyberpunk is actually a subgenre of science fiction that has been around for a few decades.

The first days

First emerging in the 1970s, the concept of cyberpunk is described as a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world, which features a disturbing mix of high technology and impoverished society, often seen as a massive juxtaposition. Lowlife and high tech mix to create a dark future.

Although cyberpunk themes began circulating around the 1970s, the first official use of this word was as the title of a short novel, written by Bruce Bethke, which follows the story of a teenage gang” vandalizing the net”, which in modern terms After the publication of this novel in 1983, the term and concept of cyberpunk gained popularity among other writers, including Bruce Sterling, Rudy Rucker and Katsuhiro Otomo.

The cyberpunk theme quickly overlapped with other industries including film and fashion, with some notable movies such as Blade Runner, Mad Max, The Terminator and of course one of the most popular cyberpunk movie franchises. greatest hits of our generation – The Matrix Trilogy. When it comes to fashion, the love for cyberpunk runway looks makes a comeback every few decades, it seems. From Mugler’s Fall 1995 collection to Balenciaga’s Terminator-inspired Spring 2007 collection and, most recently, Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 2019 couture, the cyberpunk genre continues to make a comeback, bigger and better.

The fusion of cyberpunk and gaming

It was absolutely inevitable that the cyberpunk theme would seep into the burgeoning gaming industry, where the world saw games such as Shadowrun and Blade Runner arrive in the 1980s/1990s. As in other industries, the cyberpunk genre isn’t going away any time soon. In fact, the popularity of cyberpunk games has exploded in recent years. One of the most popular cyberpunk games of the last decades, ‘cyberpunk‘, which was first released in 1998 and written by Mike Pondsmith, saw a return to the gaming market with three additional editions released in 1990, 2005 and 2020. Cyberpunk 2077, the latest version released in 2020, has saw 18 million copies sold by April 2022.

Where to go next?

With the main theme of cyberpunk being extremely futuristic and advanced technology, introducing cyberpunk-themed games to the world of Web3 seems like a perfect fit. Web3 is what many believe to be the new era of the Internet – fully decentralized, built on digital ledgers known as blockchains, allowing individual users to control their own content and data – unlike large corporations with control centralized in the era of Web2 (the Internet as we know it today). The Web3 game does exactly that, it gives users and gamers the ability to control their data and online assets, safe from the hackers we see in many cyberpunk stories. The decentralization of these games is just one attractive aspect of the Web3 gaming world.

One of the most exciting aspects of Web3 gaming is the move to a Play-To-Earn (P2E) ecosystem, thanks to support for NFT mechanics. This new era of game models offers players the opportunity to earn income while playing games as they progress through different levels and unlock new skills. Through NFT‘s, players can invest in different digital collectibles such as new weapons, avatar skins and more. By owning an in-game NFT, that specific digital asset is owned by a single person, allowing them to trade, buy and sell their NFTs as they please, with the possibility of their NFT increasing in value, adding a additional layer of revenue potential through Web3 Games.

To look forward

Although Web3 gaming may seem like an alien concept, some might think it is a concept of the future, many would be surprised to know that the world of cyberpunk Web3 gaming already exists. Games such as Hive Project truly bring the world of cyberpunk and web3 gaming to life, while staying true to the original cyberpunk genre as well as the new era of blockchain, NFTs and the P2E revolution. Are you going to take the plunge and join the new world of cyberpunk in Web3?
