ten Greyhound (2020) – 3.13

The always adorable Tom Hanks has directed two movies on Apple TV+ and one of them looks a lot like his sibling Captain Phillips movie from a few years ago. Although the storylines are different, both take place on a large ship and put Hanks’ protagonist in a harrowing situation.

In doggystyle, Hanks plays the commander of a US Navy ship that comes under attack during World War II. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound, and most critics praised the action sequences, Hanks’ performance, and how effectively he used the short length.

9 On the Rocks (2020) – 3.15

Since making her directorial debut in 1999, Sofia Coppola has been one of Hollywood’s most impressive filmmakers. For the first time since the incredible lost in translation2020 saw Coppola working with Bill Murray again.

It was for On the rocks, where Murray plays Felix and Rashida Jones plays Laura, a father/daughter duo trying to figure out if Laura’s husband is cheating on her. Although it’s not a movie filled with thrilling scenes, Coppola’s script is witty and the actors showed great chemistry.

8 Finch (2021) – 3.38

The other Tom Hanks-led feature on Apple TV+ is Bullfinch, which again calls to mind another of Hanks’ movies. Since Hanks is the only on-screen actor for the majority of the image, he can be considered similar to Castaway.

However, instead of being friends with a volleyball player, his main confidant is a robot he built during an apocalypse. As usual, Hanks’ performance was solid, while praise also went to Caleb Landry Jones’ voice acting and visuals. While it’s not the most original concept, the filmmakers made it work pretty well.

seven The Banker (2020) – 3.43

One of the first Apple TV+ originals to hit the platform was The banker, which is led by two of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood today. MCU stars Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie play Joe Morris and Bernard Garrett, America’s first two black bankers, respectively.

In many ways, the film hits the expected tropes of adapting a true story, but the performances of the main trio (Nicholas Hoult is the third one) helped boost it. The banker also won Best Independent Film at the NAACP Image Awards.

6 Swan Song (2021) – 3.50

These days it really feels like Mahershala Ali can do no wrong. The two-time Oscar winner continues to land roles in movies that critics love and audiences seem to love, too. The same could be said for her co-star in swan songAwkwafina.

The film focuses on Cameron Turner (Ali) as he considers replacing himself with a clone so his family doesn’t lose him to his terminal illness. Along the way, he talks to Kate (Awkwafina), a previously cloned human to discuss the pros and cons. The intriguing premise and Ali’s Golden Globe nomination explain why it was such a hit.

5 Palm Tree (2021) – 3.51

For the most part, Justin Timberlake is known for his comedic chops displayed in places like Saturday Night Live and her best dramatic performance came in a supporting role in The social network. 2021 saw him go dramatic in a lead performance in Palm.

He plays the title character, an ex-con who tries to turn his life around and ends up becoming a father figure to a neglected child who lives next door. While not the newest concept, the film has been praised for its emotional weight and acting, including an excellent supporting turn from Juno Temple.

4 The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) – 3.77

William Shakespeare’s work has been adapted many times throughout the history of cinema with varying success. The idea of Joel Coen writing and directing a version of Macbeth’s Tragedy was apparently sure to be one of the best.

This was only boosted by the casting of multiple Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as Lord and Lady Macbeth. Washington landed nods at several award shows for his work here (including another Oscar nomination), but the real highlight of the film was the cinematography and stunning black-and-white visuals.

3 ADOC (2021) – 3.85

The landmark movie for Apple TV+ is CODA, which became the first film distributed by a streaming service to win the Best Picture Oscar. On top of that, it was also the first winner to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

1 Wolf Walkers (2020) – 4.13

It might not be as well-known as some other Apple TV+ originals, but wolf walkers is quietly one of the best animated films in recent memory. It comes from the mind of Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart and is part of Moore’s “Irish Folk Trilogy”.

Although they do not connect, the film follows Kels’ secret and song of the sea in the series. wolf walkers centers on a young apprentice hunter destined to eliminate wolves, only to befriend a girl who can transform into one.
