Mumbai needs rock music to stay alive

Bombay : Multi-hyphenated Farhan Akhtar, who made his acting debut with the musical film “Rock On!!”, recently performed at the Independence Rock festival held in Mumbai. He thinks rock music is what keeps the city of Mumbai alive.

He seems to be right because the cosmopolitan is a melting pot of different cultures and rock music makes him vibrate.

The ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ director is a die-hard rock ‘n’ roll fan and was thrilled to perform with Indian rock band ‘Parikrama’ at the festival which returned to Mumbai after a nine-year hiatus.

Speaking about his experience at the festival, Farhan said he was happy to be there in the company of like-minded music lovers of the genre. For him “to play a song with ‘Parikrama’ was exciting” but more than that, he was there as a rock’n’roll fan and “out of love”.

He also spoke of the need to keep the festival like I-Rock in the normal fabric of a city, he said: “It’s so reassuring that the quintessential rockfest has received such a response. The city needs rock music to stay alive. I’m glad it’s happening again.”

As a voice that represents youth, Farhan believes that “we need to keep rock music burning”. He added, “Just keep the fire burning. Rock still stands for freedom. It stands for independence. It stands for having your own voice.”

Farhan’s “Dil Chahta Hai” actor Saif Ali Khan also attended Mahindra Independence Rock with his son Taimur.
