Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, chances are you’ve witnessed the giant’s outrage during Halloween ends – the latest horror feature of the genre helmed by director David Gordon Green. And while the slew of backlash from critics and audiences was admittedly hilarious, more serious business has genre diehards questioning the appeal of Green’s next project – a reboot of The Exorcist franchise.

Without a doubt, William Friedkin’s original 1973 film cemented its legacy as one of the most innovative and chilling horror films in the history of the genre. And while horror fans have expressed interest in future films in the franchise receiving a long-awaited release, Green’s overall credibility in the director’s chair sadly hurts the film’s appeal.

On Reddit, user u/ExitVelocity66 posted an emphatic statement regarding the upcoming scary episode, which presents strong ridicule and serious concern for the film. In the post, ExitVelocity66 outlines several mistakes that could go wrong in Green’s adaptation – including cast mismanagement, inconsistent character arcs, and the overall destruction of the franchise.

In the comments section, a sarcastic user posted a humorous response using the “Evil dies tonight” line from Halloween (2018), which Green directed, and playfully insisting that the “demon” in The Exorcist will die.

Another avid user then engaged users in the thread with a thought-provoking analysis of how the jaw-dropping cinematic experience probably wouldn’t fit into today’s realm of horror – especially more than religion has apparently become less of a concern for many people. On top of that, the poster claimed that Green wasn’t even a “true” genre-appropriate director.

However, some users have tried to stay positive and are patiently waiting to see how events unfold.

While it’s still too early to give up hope, horror fanatics still don’t feel comfortable with the upcoming project as the recent news of Friedkin not being part of the installment, which has discouraged many people. For now we’ll just have to wait and see when The Exorcist arrives October 13, 2023.
