Directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, this biography of George Carlin mixes interviews with members of Carlin’s family and contemporary comics such as Stephen Colbert, Patton Oswalt, Bill Burr, Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld, as well as archival of his long career. It’s an insightful and candid look at “the doyen of counterculture comedians.”

Part 1 examines his childhood, his beginnings in radio, his transition to television, his long and sometimes unequal marriage with Brenda Carlin and the birth of their child Kelly, his meteoric career thanks to comedy albums, his famous “seven bad words “, his drug use and how it led to his transformation, ultimately ending in what felt like a descent into insignificance. Had Carlin’s brand of humor become outdated?

Part 2 proves he was just getting started. After his slump in the 80s, Carlin came back stronger than ever, and his political observations on American politics and culture still speak to us today and remain more relevant than ever. Carlin’s contempt for the corruption, duplicity and dishonesty of our leaders and the lack of resistance to corruption by his fellow Americans clearly disappointed him. He died aged 71 in 2008, but his astute observations about America’s shortcomings still ring true. (two episodes of three hours and 37 minutes) Δ
