Every now and then a real movie will offer a gem of a fake movie that makes it feel like it could be an award-winning classic of the highest caliber possible. This is what happens when we watch the dream masterpiece “Clouds of Sils Maria” and hear about the movie “Maloja Snake”.
Most of the “Clouds of Sils Maria” deal with to play “Maloja Snake”, which gets a highly publicized revival production. At the start of her career, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) played the role of Sigrid: the magnetic young beauty who captured the attention of the whole world. Now she is asked to play Helena, the character that Sigrid uses and then rejects. Maria struggles to come to terms with the role, seeing Helena only as a pathetic character who humbles herself by falling for a much younger woman who probably never really cares about her.
During all of this, we learn that Maria also played Sigrid in the film adaptation of “Maloja Snake”, and we hate that we can’t see that. All of the pieces of the play we see are sleek, enigmatic, and tense, and when you combine that with some psychologically sophisticated lesbian romance and a young Juliette Binoche? It’s maddening that we can’t see all of this in action.
