It’s a terribly confusing day to be a Doja Cat fan, but that seems to be what Doja Cat loves. More than a week after saying CR Fashion Book that her next album was going to be inspired by 1990s German rave music, the 26-year-old rapper tweeted that she was actually just joking – before continuing to troll her followers about the supposed genres of her upcoming music in a chain of sarcastic tweets.
“I’m not making a German rave culture album guys,” she wrote on Tuesday (Sept. 20). “I was pranking the outlet who interviewed me about it.”
The “Vegas” rapper sure fooled a lot of fans, but to be honest, she was pretty convincing when she told designer Matthew M. Williams, who interviewed her for the September 13 fashion magazine article , that she modeled her sound after the rave music of that specific period.
“We have so many ideas and making those ideas cohesive is the challenge right now,” Doja, whose latest album planet she fell last year, said at the time. “I can’t really say much. I just know there’s a lot going on. I’m very much into this German 90s rave vibe at the moment and it’s really fun.
“I say [dance music] It’s kind of the trend right now, but I loved it when I was little, ”she added. “Now that I can express it (obviously I couldn’t buzz my head and wear a furry bra and have a navel piercing at the time), I kind of accept that. It’s a kind of a clue for the album. Rave culture, not house.
But apparently it was just a bunch of nonsense – and Doja doesn’t stop there. After her first tweet saying that the German rave had apparently never been in the picture, the Grammy winner continued to tease fans about what her next songs will or won’t involve. “I’m doing an R&B album,” she wrote. “Pure R&B, no rap at all.”
Then she immediately contradicted herself. “Y’all, I was lying,” Doja tweeted. “I’m making an experimental jazz album. I thought it would be funny to make you think I was doing r&b because I knew it would work but I’m doing experimental jazz now, the honest truth.
The “Woman” artist went on to joke that no, it’s actually has been is going to be an R&B album with a single eight-bar rap verse featured on “the 34th song of luxury”. “It was also a lie”, she then retorted. “There is no side A or side B. The album will have 8 sides and will come in the shape of a cube.”
To end her series of pranks, she released a voice memo titled “the truth.” “I’m releasing a rock album,” she said. “There are going to be emo jams. The name of the album is called “Rock Out: Volume 1, The Abyss 5,000”. I’m going to dye my hair… and wear a lot of plaid. I am entering a rock phase.
