10 finished movies you’ll never see

There are a lot of movies that were dropped in pre-production or mid-production. But it’s incredibly rare to close up shop when everything is filmed, edited and ready to be shipped around the world. Even if a movie is expected to be awful or a guaranteed bomb, its release will allow the studio to recoup some money. It may not be much, but any amount is better than nothing.

But there are times when completed movies never come out (as you should be painfully aware after hearing the recent announcements from Warner Bros. Discovery).

There are all kinds of reasons why a filmmaker or studio puts down a project, even if they are 100% ready. If a director abandons the film in post-production, it cannot be released in its unedited form. Other times, a movie’s premiere will be locked indefinitely due to a legal dispute. Sometimes a finished film cannot be released because the negatives have been destroyed. Sometimes the powers that be don’t release the movie just because…it’s rubbish.

Whatever the reason, it’s guaranteed that you’ll never live to see any of the finished movies on this list.

Temptation follows nightclub worker Annie (Zoe Saldana) who agrees to a Faustian pact to ensure her boyfriend, Billy, becomes a superstar. As a trap, Annie will lose part of her soul if she utters the words “After all I’ve done for you”.

As you’d expect from any cautionary tale, Annie inevitably utters that phrase, knocking her voice out. As she tries to call off the deal, she sees her life spinning out of control and risks losing her soul completely.

What makes Temptation more than just a modern take on the devil’s chord motif is how the story is told almost entirely through rock music. Rather than using lip sync – which is common practice – all performers’ voices were recorded live for authenticity.

If Temptation sounds like your cup of tea, so be it. After its premiere at the New York Musical Festival in 2004, it was never shown publicly again. According to producer, Kerry Barden, Temptation is still “unfinished” but should be released soon.

But since we haven’t heard a single detail about Temptation in nearly two decades, it’s fair to say that’s never going to happen.
